Organizing! (And Candy!)

If you've arrived here looking for something stamped or papercrafted, I got nothing. But, I have made progress in my stamp room! See?

It doesn't look like much in the way of progress, but all of my cabinets and organizers are in place and all I have to do is unpack and organize. I am most definitely going to be purging as I go. And I am contemplating a different way to arrange my things. While visiting a friend and fellow crafter recently, I noticed she had categorized her embellishments by color group...i.e. all the little red doodads together, all blue, green, etc. Mine were separated by type.... i.e. all eyelets, flowers, brads together.
I'd love to be more simplified. What do YOU suggest? What has worked for you?
For your assistance, I am going to offer candy! I haven't done that in a while. But remember I said I am purging? I've got duplicates and just plain too many of this and that. Please comment here with your organizational tips and tricks. I'll draw a winner on Friday (8-29). And I'll try to get a pic posted of the treats between now and then! I think you'll like!
Have a great week!
~Angel

I think you should continue to separate by type. That is what I am going to do.I have a question for YOU - Where can I buy the most inexpensive storage cabinets/trays whatever for my scrapbook paper and stuff?? Do you have any pointers?

My crafting area is a mess! The only tip I can think of is that I use a 5-row pant hanger to store my ribbon rolls.

I've started doing it by color and have been amazed at how easy it is to find something! I usually know what color I want something and when I pull the box out, I find the perfect thing without going through many boxes looking for an idea. I started with the empty SU! Stamp boxes, but have had to upgrade to photo boxes for some colors. It's a pain to seperate somethings at first, but it really has helped! (BTW...I'm watching the organization of your room in anticipation of making mine better when we fianlly get a house! I'll actually have a craft ROOM instead of corner!)
Craft on!

You have your work cut out for you Angel! Last night, I was over at Craft Critique and they had reviewed the coolest storage cabinets on coasters for scrap room. SO reasonable and percect for us all! Do you have an Ikea near you? I am heading down this week or next for sure. Good luck with your organization process! Hugs, Deb

You're making GREAT progess. I'm all for sorting by color. I use those little hardware bins with little drawers for buttons, brads, eyelets, etc. (all sorted by color).

Then I have cubes with drawers (12x12x3) and sort larger things like ribbon, chipboard, thickers, etc by color.

isn't organizing and re-organizing our craft space a chore???? I've also been working on mine....my most recent attempt is to organize my scraps by color in one of those 7 drawer craft organizers from Target. It works great and I can find any color that I want.
I am also trying to organize my papers by company....I've had it that way for a week....not sure it's the best solution for me....so I'll give it another week or so and if that doesn't work, I'll change to organizing pp by prominent color too....
I have my ribbons and fibers organized on pieces of cardstock by color....the cardstock measures 4 inches by 10 inches...it works great as the cards fit into a plastic 3 drawer tote from walmart..
good luck

Organization is SUCH a personal thing - if type works for you, go for it!

Here's a few organizational tips I've saved in years past:
- Get your fibers organized! Wrap your fibers onto embroidery floss cards and store them by shades of colors in embroidery floss boxes. You will be amazed at how many fibers you actually have and you will be able to find what you need easier too.
- To make scrapbooking quicker and easier, organization is the key. Try organizing your paper by colors and themes, your stickers by themes and your embellishments by colors.
- Scour your pantry and you'll probably find some great organizational products! From baby food jars to snack containers, there are products that are perfect for storing eyelets, ribbon and other embellishments.

to me organizing by color would be alot easier as i can find it. seeing the color and choosing there is easier. at least for me it is.

I'm changing my stamps and filing them by theme. I file my paper by color. Hope this helps.

Embellishments--I switched the way I stored them about a year ago--and I use them WAY more now. I store them by color now. I have most in a hardware storage drawers (bought in Sears Hardware ages ago) with a button of the color on the front. I have my flowers the same way (too fluffy for the little drawers) but in a rotating spice rack (with glass jars in it) I got it at a church rummage sale.

When I look for embellishments (while creating) I look for color--not a certain type of embellishment. SO this works for me. BTW--I moved this summer, too. I totally understand--thankfully I had a friend come and help me set up my stamp room.

It's coming along nicely.
I love being organized. One thing that works for me is the way I sort my pp.
First by season, then by theme, next is by gender and finally by color.

Angel... I have an extremely small space to have my crafting things and the only way I have found that works for me is to arrange by color... that way I can find things that actually go together.

Good luck with your organization. I am always trying to get my reorganized. I have them by type now, but I see eveyone's comments on organizing by color and I think I will try that too. P.S. Hope you don't get hit by Tropical Storm Fay. We didn't get too much here in the part of FL I live in.

I think organizing by color is wonderful. With smaller containers holding each type of item (i.e red brads, red flowers etc) stored inside a larger container for all of your "red" embellishments. Sometimes it is helpful just to pull the colors you want to work with and have all of the embellishments available to give you those extra ideas you may not have thought of. Have fun!!

I never thought about organizing my embellishments by color. I'll have to give that some thought. I do organize my paper scraps by color in a drawer system and use them a lot more now. I just spent time organizing all my patterned paper--by color, theme, season etc. I think this will help me find and use it more efficiently. Have fun organizing--I think it is always an ongoing project.

Good job Angel!
I find I spend actually too much time organizing and too little time working. I guess I just like playing with my stuff. I purchased several plastic workshop "bins" from Wal-mart. They have white opaque drawers in which I can see what's inside, plus I can label everything. In the small drawers I keep my brads, etc. and in the largers drawers, I can store flowers, even my ink pads will fit inside. They stack nicely and aren't very deep so they can sit well on a desk.

I'm still in the process of getting organized. I kinda like the idea of organizing it by color, but I don't have a LOT of space (just a desk and a plastic cart with drawers) and that makes it difficult.

I have my stamps in the lids of the clamshells inside of a hard cardboard box I found in clearance. I can put ohhhh so many stamps that way! And they are easy to find too! I have many indexed and then I can just stamp in a paper and tape it to the back and write down the name of the set. Better than the cd boxes!!!! And I've been able to put up to two cut stamp sets in one lid.

I have many others (that I've gotten in grab bags, etc) in a binder.

I have all my papers and cardstocks together and all my materials, etc. So, I have everything I can by categories too.

I am so bad organized that I can't give any suggestion to anyone!

The color thing seems to be best for papers, ribbons, embellishments, etc. then by theme. I have mostly Stampin Up stamps and keep them sorted into large bins alphabetically by set name. I have a master spreadsheet of all the sets with a page that lists the words. This way I can just look on the database if I know I need to find "Rock On" and match up the stamp set instead of blindly digging. It took some time, but by having all my supplies inventoried on the computer (accessories, inks, refilles, etc.) I avoid buying duplicates. I can't tell you how many times I've fallen in love with the same stamp and bought it because I couldn't remember if I already had it. I need LOTS or organizational help! Happy Unpacking!

I hope you have better luck unpacking and organizing your stamp room than I did after our move. I some how got so far behind in cataloging stamps that I don't know where to start to get caught up. I guess my tip would be to get an electric or battery-operated label maker and label everything. That way you save yourself valuable time when searching for something. I need to follow my own advice now. :D

I organize my paper according to color. And all small embellishments go into a tool box with compartments. The big stuff are on shelves and in ziplock bags. Not really that organized, but I'm a noob :) Thanks for the chance!
